about
This is a live recording of Art Terry & The Black Bohemians playing the single Make It at Resonance FM London radio station studio
Make it is the song which was originally recorded during the making of the Helena Smith short film titled The Self Isolation Songbook. The Self Isolation Songbook film was made during lockdown.
For 52 days in a row Art Terry recorded a song during each day of the UK Lockdown, naming the project the Self Isolation Songbook. Each day Helena Smith made a video for the song. On day 8, Art began to feel feverish, and on day 9 he was hit by coronavirus, singing through sweats and chills.
Recovering but still weak, on day 15 Art recorded Make It, in gratitude to neighbours who were helping out with shopping. This was a touchpaper for the Self Isolation Songbook, when its visual language changed and Helena and Art began to introduce more abstract and surreal elements.
The Self Isolation Songbook short film, comprised of the daily videos, was premiered at the We Out Here festival, and screened at the Peckham Free Film Festival, the CCA in Glasgow and Iklectik. After the film screenings, Art's band The Black Bohemian's perform extracts from the film's soundtrack.
This recording is the live version of Make It.
--‘Los Angeles born Art Terry simply tells it as it is, a folksy counsellor who comes on with style. Terry is a precious beam of light in a confusing world.’ The Wire
‘Brings the questioning quirky funk of Sly Stone together with the provocative poetry of pathfinder Lou Reed.’ Resonance FM
'Art Terry's playing is terrific.' New York Times

MAKE IT
I’m gonna make it you're gonna make it too.
You’re like a psychic, I’m like you’re side kick boo.
There’s nuthin at the shop we can pick up. There’s no one here who can help us make up. We leave our gas card out by the front door, so it can be filled, they’ll bring it back by noon.
I’ve got my face mask you’ve got you're gloves on boo. Strange fate evades us when we are strangers too.
New people meet us, they just don’t get it. Think they should greet us, they keep forgetting. The postman runs down the stairs so frightened. He holds his breath hoping he won’t die soon.
We’re We’re gonna make it, you’re gonna make it too. The money they lost, will build a new home school.
We are marooned on Gilligan's Island, I watched every film, still I can’t find him.
It’s the beginning of a new season. But when George Floyd died, we had to help him
You're gonna make it we’re gonna make it too.
